Learn Traditional Woodcraft Skills at the Heritage Woodcraft Centre
Come to our WA Wood show and meet Greg Miller and friends from the Heritage Woodcraft Centre Join in the fun.
Whatever your skill level, there are many ways for you to experience the pleasures of traditional hand tool woodworking. We would love to help you build your skills and experience, to introduce you to ancient knowledge and practices which have been all but lost. We love old tools, we love the traditional skills and knowledge, and we believe there is a growing place for the tactile delights of working with our hands in our increasingly digitised world.
Working with our hands grounds us with the material and the tools we use. Doing it together builds community and connects us together through the creative process. With no screaming power tools we can talk and laugh together as we craft beautiful things with our hands. Can you feel your heart warming?
The Joy of Wood has been offering woodworking experiences for people of all ages around Perth for 9 years – in Festivals, community events, schools and various locations through public workshop programs.
Over the last 3 years, having a dedicated teaching space has enabled The Joy of Wood to greatly bring the Joy of hand tool woodworking to many more people. This teaching space, the Heritage Woodcraft Centre, is home to The Joy of Wood.
It is where Greg Miller and friends bring you the pleasures of traditional woodworking in many different ways, from public workshops to private tuition and more. Come and join us and discover the wisdom of the centuries through your hands and your heart. The Heritage Woodcraft Centre is the only place in Perth dedicated entirely to teaching traditional woodworking hand skills and techniques. It is a place where wood work history is appreciated and hand tools are respected; where traditional skills are learned and enjoyed by people of all ages.
Check out the website for information on Public workshops, Private workshop or Private Tuition.
Skills-based and project based wood working workshops are offered each month through our Joy of Wood public Workshop Programs. Each month the programs are different. Some workshops are run for adults, some for children, and some for kids and parents/grand parents together. From Spoon Carving to Furniture making, from PalletCraft to Cajon Drum making, from Tool Sharpening to Wood Carving – there are so many fantastic ways for you to experience the joy of woodworking at the Heritage Woodcraft Centre!
We love to teach special groups of people who come together to create together. These include family groups, workplace groups, Homeschooler groups, and other pre-existing groups. How does it work? It’s easy: The organising person arranges with us a mutually suitable date, time, project, and other details. Your group comes to the Heritage Woodcraft Centre on that day and we have a wonderful time together, learning and experiencing the delights of hand tool woodworking. It is a great way to spend time together.
Why not give your woodcraft skills a boost through one-on-one tuition? From absolute beginners to master class sessions, our private tuition is available to people of all ages and from all walks of life. Usually provided in 2 hour sessions, some are regular weekly or fortnightly, some are occasional, and some are one-off. It all depends on what you want and what you feel you need. Private tuition is a very effective way to build your skills. It is also a wonderful therapy tool for people with various disabilities and those wanting to re-build their lives. Hand tool woodworking offers wonderful therapeutic benefits. Creating with the hands is good for the mind, body and soul!
